Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis (born June 29, 1893, in Kolkata) was an Indian academic who held citizenship in India and British Raj. He had a diverse background in the fields of economics, mathematics, physics, and statistics. Mahalanobis died in Kolkata on June 28, 1972.
Mahalanobis received his education from institutions such as the University of Calcutta, King's College, Cambridge, and the University of Cambridge. He also attended Brahmo Boys School in his early years. William Herrick Macaulay served as Mahalanobis' doctoral advisor, while Samarendra Nath Roy was one of his doctoral students.
Mahalanobis is widely recognized for his notable works including the Mahalanobis distance and the Feldman–Mahalanobis model. Additionally, he founded the Indian Statistical Institute, which is a prominent organization in the field of statistics and research.
