Organization attributes
Open Cells Ukraine is part of the large international animal protection organization Anima International, which is represented in 9 countries (Ukraine, Great Britain, Norway, Denmark, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, France, Russia). We are also members of the OWA (Open Wing Alliance) and Fur Free Alliance, which operate in more than 50 countries. We protect animals that are exploited in intensive production. One of the areas of our work is cooperation with business. We are initiating changes (in business, in the retailer sector and in the manufacturing industry) regarding animal welfare conditions. We research and document the real conditions of transportation and keeping of animals on farms and in the production sphere. As part of the Cage-Free Alliance of Ukrainian Business, we are negotiating with producers and the state (a ban on the legal level of keeping chickens in cages) to abandon the sale and use of eggs from cages and move to 100% sale and use of free-range chickens. In the campaign - "Fur-Free Retail" - we work with brands in the fashion industry to abandon fur and promote ethical alternatives to natural fur. As part of the Stop Foie Gras campaign, we are working with restaurants and plan to continue working with retailers to stop using and selling foie gras as one of the most brutal products for animals. The work of our UA Plant-Based plant food campaign is to work with restaurants, producers, sellers to introduce plant alternatives and vegan dishes on the menu. In addition to working with businesses, part of the project is the Plant-Based Challenge - a 10-day free program that helps people try a plant-based diet. We also have the "Light Side of Strength" project, which tells the story of athletes on a plant-based diet and debunks the myth that healthy sports nutrition must contain animal products. Open Cells also regularly hold educational events on animal protection issues throughout Ukraine.
The aim of the organization is to implement systemic changes to reduce animal suffering in the industrial sector.
Our goal is to reduce the suffering of animals in the production, because at this stage, it is not possible to close or ban all production. This is a big part of the economy and it is unrealistic to take all the animals out of this industry. Now, all that can be done is to reduce their levels of suffering, pain and stress. And we decided to achieve this through educational activities, work with business, to initiate a policy of responsibility, not only in relation to customers but also to animals.
The uniqueness of our organization is that we work with the largest number of affected animals in the world - farm animals, and are engaged in animal protection among the commercial sector.
