Nicholas Kaufmann, better known by his Latinized name Nikolaus Mercator, was a German mathematician. The choice of a Latin pseudonym is due to the fact that in Latin Mercator means the same as Kaufman in German - a merchant. Member of the Royal Society of London. Born in Eutin, from 1642 to 1648 he lived in the Netherlands.
