Nescafé is Nestlé's international brand of instant coffee, first introduced on April 1, 1938. The name "Nescafe" is a combination of two words: "Nestlé" and "café".

In the 1930s, Brazil approached Nestlé to find a way to preserve and industrially process coffee beans. For years, Brazil has faced the problem of overproduction of green coffee. Every year, huge reserves of coffee were lost due to the lack of technology for processing and storing beans after drying and primary processing. Max Morgenthaler led the development project. For seven years, he and his colleagues have been looking for a way to create a "coffee cube" that would retain all the properties of coffee beans and could withstand long-term storage, and then turned into a drink by adding water. Production began at a factory in the Swiss town of Orb, 50 km from Nestlé's headquarters in Vevey.

On April 1, 1938, Nestlé introduced a new product under the brand name Nescafé. The product is an instant, powdered coffee that became a staple of the American diet during World War II[2] . All the products of the plant in the USA, which amounted to about 1 million packages per year, went exclusively to supply the army.

In 1965, Nestlé introduced a brand of freeze-dried coffee in Europe called Nescafé Gold.

In 1966, Nestlé developed a freeze-dried coffee brand called Taster's Choice.
