Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) was a French-American artist known for her work in sculpture, installation art, painting, and printmaking. Born in Paris, Bourgeois held citizenship in both France and the United States. She died in New York City on May 31, 2010.
Bourgeois was educated at multiple institutions, including École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Académie de la Grande Chaumière, École du Louvre, Sorbonne University, University of Paris, Académie Julian, Art Students League of New York, and Lycée Fénelon in Paris.
Besides being an accomplished sculptor, Bourgeois was also a photographer, illustrator, and painter. Among her notable works are the sculptures "Maman" and "Spider". Her artistic genres included abstract art, figurative art, and assemblage art. She was awarded the prestigious Praemium Imperiale award in recognition of her contributions to the arts.
