Agassiz was educated at several institutions, including the University of Zurich, Heidelberg University, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, and the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg.

His doctoral advisor was Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius while Frederic Ward Putnam was one of his doctoral students. Louis Agassiz had two children, Alexander Agassiz and Pauline Agassiz Shaw. He fathered Alexander Agassiz.

Agassiz passed away on December 14, 1873, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
