Lars Peter Hansen (born October 26, 1952) is an economist and statistician from the United States, known for his contributions to the fields of economics and macroeconomics. He was born in Champaign, Illinois, and holds citizenship in the United States.
Hansen completed his education at Logan High School in Utah, followed by Utah State University and the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities). His doctoral advisor was Christopher A. Sims, and his notable doctoral students include John Henniker Heaton, Jaroslav Borovička, Narayana Kocherlakota, Masao Ogaki, and Bo Honoré.
Hansen is known for his work on the generalized method of moments and the application of robust control to macroeconomics and asset pricing. His achievements earned him the 2013 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, recognizing his significant contributions to the field.
