He was educated at Harvard University and Harvard College before going on to study at Boston University School of Law. James was the founder of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.

James Roosevelt was the child of Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States, and Eleanor Roosevelt, the First Lady. He had two children: James Roosevelt (lawyer) and Sara Wilford.

James Roosevelt passed away in Newport Beach, California.
