JDoodle is an Australian software development company creating an ecosystem of programming tools aimed at software developers of all levels with a focus on education. These tools include integrated development environments (IDEs), plugins, a teach and assess platform, and custom-made solutions. JDoodle monetizes through a freemium SaaS subscription model, and the company has stated most of its revenue comes from its API and plugin solutions both standard and custom plans. In June 2023, JDoodle stated its platform is used by 800,000 users, including 3,000 educational institutions, such as the University of Kansas and Link Education Alliance. JDoodle has plans for new revenue streams, including premium IDEs, hosting, courses, assignments, and a talent marketplace.
JDoodle's programming tools cater to the following:
- Students—with easy-to-set-up code environments for learning how to code directly within the browser without needing to install software and libraries locally
- Educators—democratizing access to all its tools to help educators teach new developers and assess their ability and progress from a single platform
- Software developers—resources for building and deploying applications in the cloud while unifying a range of programming toolsets in a single platform
Originally founded in 2013 by CEO Gokul Chandrasekaran, JDoodle started as a side project with one page and programming language set up for $20. Chandrasekaran spent his evenings and weekends adding new features based on user feedback. He has stated that he started JDoodle because of the inefficiencies he encountered, including expensive and complicated development tools, while working on his bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science. After seven years of working on it as a side project and reaching 500,000 users, Chandrasekaran quit his job to focus on JDoodle full-time.
On June 14, 2023, JDoodle announced $3.2 million AUD (about $2.2 million USD) in funding. The venture round was led by Main Sequence, a venture firm founded by Australia’s national science agency. Main Sequence first met JDoodle while the start-up was participating in The University of New South Wales’ 10x Accelerator Founders Program.
JDoodle has headquarters in Canberra, Australia, but is a remote-first company.
