Harry Markowitz, also known as Harry Max Markowitz or Harold Maxwell Markowitz, is an economist from the United States. He was born on August 24, 1927, in Chicago. Markowitz studied at Carl Schurz High School. Later, he attended the University of Chicago, where he was advised by Milton Friedman during his doctorate.

Markowitz is best known for his work in modern portfolio theory, efficient frontier, sparse matrix methods, and SIMSCRIPT. Throughout his career as an economist, he has focused on both economics and macroeconomics.

In 1990, Harry Markowitz was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. He has also received the John von Neumann Theory Prize for his contributions to the field.
