Guillermo Cabrera Infante was born on April 22, 1929 in Cuba in a poor family. My parents were active communists.

In 1951, together with Spanish cinematographer Nestor Almendros, who had lived in Cuba since 1948, and director Thomas Gutierrez, Alea founded the Havana Cinematheque, was its first director.

Cabrera Infante's first story was banned by Batista's censorship in 1952, the author was subjected to extrajudicial persecution, and later published under the pseudonym Guillermo Cain.
