George Cukor (born George Dewey Cukor on July 7, 1899; died January 24, 1983) was an American film and theatre director known for working closely with actors. Born in New York City, he held United States citizenship and is best known for films spanning a variety of genres, such as drama, satirical film, historical romance, psychological thriller, and musicals.

Cukor studied at DeWitt Clinton High School and began his career in film in 1930, directing "Grumpy" and "The Virtuous Sin". His last film, "Rich and Famous," was released in 1981. Some of his notable works include the 1964 film "My Fair Lady" and the 1954 film "A Star Is Born".

Throughout his career, Cukor received various awards, such as an Academy Award for Best Director, Grammy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Primetime Emmy Award, and Directors Guild of America Award.

In addition to his work in film, Cukor directed theater productions and was a member of the board of directors for the 1944 film "Gaslight". He passed away in Los Angeles in 1983.
