Frits Zernike was a Dutch physicist, mathematician, and chemist, born on July 16, 1888, in the Kingdom of the Netherlands . He is known for his work in phase-contrast microscopy, Zernike polynomials, Ornstein–Zernike equation, and Van Cittert–Zernike theorem.
Zernike was educated at the University of Amsterdam and the University of Groningen . Throughout his career, he held the nationality of the Netherlands. His academic discipline was physics, with a focus on optics.
Frits Zernike was awarded the 1953 Nobel Prize in Physics for his invention of the phase-contrast microscope, which is a critical tool for biological and medical research. Zernike's contributions to the field of optics greatly influenced the development of various scientific disciplines.
Among his students were physicists Harold Hopkins and Herman Pieter de Boer . Zernike passed away in Amersfoort, Netherlands, on March 10, 1966.
