Erich Maria Remarque (born Erich Paul Remark) was a German-American writer who was born on June 22, 1898, in Osnabrück, and died on September 25, 1970, in Locarno. He was best known for his novel , which was published in 1929. Remarque's work often focused on the experiences of soldiers during war, as well as the effects of war on the people who were left behind.
He held occupations as a novelist, writer, playwright, screenwriter and author of prose. Remarque authored notable works such as , , , , , , , , and . During his lifetime, he received awards such as the Justus Mözer Medal (1963), the Order "For Services to Germany" (1967), and was named an Honorary Citizen of Ascona (1968).
Erich Maria Remarque was the son of Peter Franz Remark and Anna Maria and had two siblings: Elfriede Scholz and Erna. He held citizenships in Germany, the United States, and later lived in Switzerland.
