Overview

Edsger W. Dijkstra was a mathematician, physicist, computer scientist, and engineer born on May 11, 1930, in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He held citizenship in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Dijkstra's education included attending Leiden University, University of Amsterdam, Gymnasium Erasmianum, University of Cambridge, and The University of Texas at Austin.

He was best known for creating Dijkstra's algorithm, a graph search algorithm used to determine the shortest path between nodes in a graph. His other notable works included Smoothsort, Shunting-yard algorithm, and Banker's algorithm. In 1972, Dijkstra received the Turing Award for his contributions to the field.

Edsger W. Dijkstra's doctoral advisor was Adriaan van Wijngaarden, and he mentored two doctoral students, Jan L. A. van de Snepscheut and Nico Habermann. Dijkstra passed away on August 6, 2002, in Nuenen, Netherlands.
