Codd was educated at Poole Grammar School, Exeter College, Oxford, and the University of Michigan. While at the University of Michigan, his doctoral advisor was John Henry Holland.

One of his notable works includes Codd's cellular automaton. In 1981, Codd received the prestigious Turing Award.
