The history of hockey development in Altai dates back to the mid-1950s. The founder and the first coach of the Barnaul masters hockey team was Vasily Sergeyevich Fomichev. The Barnaul team at that time was called "Spartak" and defended the sports honor of the region at the republican level. December 1954 is considered to be the beginning of the formation of Altai hockey. It was then that the Barnaul Spartacists went to the republican competitions for the first time. On the basis of the Spartak masters team, which in 1954/1955 and 1955/1956 competed in the RSFSR championship, and then in the class "B" of the USSR championship, HC Motor was founded in the fall of 1959, the team was transferred to the trade union organization of the Altai Motor Plant. The team spent 2 seasons (1954/55 and 1955/56) in the championship of the RSFSR zone "Siberia" of the first group of class "B" and 3 seasons (1956/57-1958/59), in which it showed not the best results.
