Daniel Nathans (1928-1999) was an American biochemist and microbiologist who was educated at the University of Delaware and Washington University in St. Louis. He was born in Wilmington, Delaware and held citizenship in the United States. Nathans was awarded the 1978 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work in molecular biology. His career as a researcher and educator took place primarily in the United States.
Nathans made several contributions to the fields of biochemistry and microbiology. His work earned him international recognition and served as a foundation for many advancements in the understanding of genetic information.
During his career, Nathans supervised doctoral students, including Robert Margolskee and Marilyn Kozak. He passed away in Baltimore on November 16, 1999.
