Overview

Burton Richter (1931-2018) was an American physicist well known for his contributions to particle physics. Born in New York City, he later became a citizen of the United States. Richter was educated at Mercersburg Academy, Far Rockaway High School, and eventually at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He conducted his doctoral studies under advisor Bernard T. Feld.

Richter received the 1976 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work in experimental discoveries of a new type of particle. He passed away in Palo Alto, California in 2018.
