Bitmoji is an app that allows users to personalize emojis and share them with other individuals via text message, and social media like Facebook, Messenger, and Slack. Users create their personal cartoon caricatures, which they then utilize to express different emotions with one another, as an alternative to traditional face emojis.
Bitmoji is owned by Snap Inc., the company that developed Snapchat. Bitmoji was originally created by the Toronto-based company Bitstrips. Established in 2007, Bitstrips specialized in developing digital comic strips that featured personalized avatars. When emojis gained more popularity online in different chat apps, Bitstrips created a separate app called Bitmoji in 2014, specializing specifically in emojis.
In 2016, Snapchat’s parent company, Snap Inc., bought Bitstrips, closed it, and began operating Bitmoji as a single division. Though Snap owns the company, Bitmoji can be used on different platforms. Bitmoji is available on Facebook, Gboard, iMessage, and work-oriented applications like Slack. Bitmoji is Chrome and Gmail compatible. It can also be used for games.
