Bill Toomey, officially known as William Anthony Toomey, was born on October 1, 1939, in Philadelphia. He is a former American track and field competitor, and notably the 1968 Olympic decathlon champion. Toomey holds citizenship in the United States.
He was educated at the University of Colorado Boulder and Worcester Academy. Toomey is married to Mary Rand, and they have two daughters, Samantha and Sarah.
Throughout his career, Toomey received numerous awards and accolades. These include being named Track & Field Athlete of the Year in 1969, winning a Gold medal – first place at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games in Decathlon, earning a Gold medal – first place at the 1967 Winnipeg Pan American Games in Decathlon, and securing a Gold medal – first place at the 1965 Budapest Universiade in Decathlon.
