Atticus Capital is a venture capital and private equity firm making event-driven equity investments that is headquartered in New York City, New York and was founded by Timothy R. Barakett in 1995. In 2007 the firm was managing over $20 billion in assets and was one of the largest hedge funds in the world. Barakett decided to close Atticus Capital in August 2009 and return all outside capital to its investors. There were no sidepockets created by Atticus Capital and all capital was return to its investors by December 2009. During its operating years Atticus Capital is estimated to have generated $7 billion in capital for its investors. Barakett claims he made the decision to close Atticus Capital to spend more time with his family, and begin focusing on philanthropic projects and his global direct investment business.
