AMP - Australian Finance Corporation. It operates mainly in the Australian and New Zealand market. Founded in 1849 as the Australian Mutual Provident Society— a non-profit insurance company and mutual insurance society. In 1998, the company abandoned the unit form and placed on the Australian and New Zealand stock exchanges. The company carries out banking activities, life insurance, investment activities, maintenance of pension deposits and other operations.
AMP's shareholder register is one of the largest in the Australian Union, most of the shareholders reside in Australia and New Zealand. This is due to the fact that during the dissolution of the unit company, all the unit holders received shares in the new company. The British division was separated in 2003 into a separate company — Henderson Group plc.
AMP is Australia's largest company managing private and corporate pension deposits, and one of the major regional investment management funds, with more than 122 billion Australian dollars under management (as of March 16, 2007).
AMP has two main divisions providing services in the markets of Australia and New Zealand - AMP Financial Services and AMP Capital Investors.
