William Kahan (born June 5, 1933 in Toronto) is a Canadian mathematician and computer scientist. He holds citizenship in Canada and has spent a significant part of his career in the United States. Kahan was educated at the University of Toronto and is best known as a developer of the IEEE 754 floating-point standard.

In 1989, William Kahan received the Turing Award for his work on numerical analysis and floating-point arithmetic. Throughout his career, Kahan mentored and supervised doctoral students, including James Demmel.
