Velvichia

Welwitschia (Welwitschia mirabilis) is a strange plant that grows in the deserts of Namibia and Angola in South Africa. It is the only species of its kind and has a unique appearance. The plant consists of two broad, leaf-like structures that gradually wear out and grow over the life of the plant, which can last over 1,000 years. Welwitschia uses its root system to get water and nutrients from deep soil layers.

Velvichia is an object of great scientific interest and has been described by many scientists. It was named after the Austrian botanist Friedrich Wilhelm von Welwitsch, who first described the plant in 1859. Welwitschia is considered one of the symbols of Namibia and has a high cultural significance for the peoples of this country.
