Turmeric ( lat. Cúrcuma ) is a genus of perennial herbaceous plants from the ginger family ( Zingiberaceae ).
Perennial herbs with thick, branched, fleshy and fragrant rhizomes, adventitious roots often have tuberous thickenings . The leaves are usually large, lanceolate or oblong. The flowers are bisexual, may have a different color, usually collected in apical inflorescences, equipped with covering leaves. The only stamen is located at the base of the largest tepal. The fruit is a box. All parts of the plant contain a noticeable amount of essential oil .
