He was born in the family of a colonial officer. He studied at Christ Church College, Oxford University, but failed his final exams. He tried himself as a poet, then got a job at the Daily Express, first as a correspondent, and then as a columnist.

He was regularly published in Reynolds News and other left-wing publications. Compiled crosswords for Private Eye. He has written several books, including biographies of Lord Beaverbrook and the Soviet intelligence officer Guy Burgess. He retired in 1974, after which he received a life peerage.
