In the center of the plot, the local police sheriff Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), who fell into a coma during a shootout. When the man wakes up, he sees an empty hospital with no patients or staff, and a locked fridge with a warning. In an attempt to find at least one living being, he goes out into the street and sees mountains of corpses and immediately remembers his wife and child. Now his goal is to find his family.
Robert Kirkman, the creator of comics, admitted that he wanted to introduce Michonne to the plot of the series much earlier, because her character instantly gained a huge number of fans. The producers even wanted to give her a cameo in the first series, but this idea was soon abandoned.
