The Socratic Method is a method of exposing logical fallacies through asking critical questions of initial assumptions that was developed by the Greek philosopher Socrates. It is also known as the method of Elenchus, elentic method, and Socratic debate. The Socratic method is most widely used in forms of cooperative arguing, such as arguments in debates or between students and teachers, to discover underlying presuppositions of the topic being discussed through a combination of critical thinking and questioning. The goal of the Socratic method is not necessarily to determine correct answers to questions, but to discover new questions and develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter being discussed.
