Shel Silverstein, born Sheldon Allan Silverstein , was an American poet, composer, writer, musician, songwriter, cartoonist, illustrator, screenwriter, and actor . He was born on September 25, 1930 in Chicago , and died in Key West on May 10, 1999 . Silverstein held citizenship in the United States .
He was educated at the University of Chicago , the School of the Art Institute of Chicago , and Roosevelt High School in Chicago, Illinois . Silverstein was known for his work in children's literature . Some of his notable works include "The Giving Tree" , "A Light in the Attic" , "Falling Up" , "Runny Babbit" , "Where the Sidewalk Ends" , "Uncle Shelby's ABZ Book" , "Lafcadio: The Lion Who Shot Back" , and "Don't Bump the Glump!" .
Throughout his career, Silverstein received several awards, including the Grammy Award for Best Country Song and the Grammy Award for Best Children's Album .
