He was born in Pontrhydyfen and held citizenship in the United Kingdom and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Burton was educated at Exeter College, Oxford, and went on to have an illustrious acting career on stage and screen.

During his lifetime, Burton received numerous awards and accolades, including Primetime Emmy Awards, BAFTA Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Grammy Awards, and a star on the Walk of Fame. One of his Grammy Awards was for Best Children's Album.

Some of Burton's most notable works include Anne of the Thousand Days, The Taming of the Shrew, Becket, The Robe, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, Hamlet, and My Cousin Rachel.

Richard Burton passed away on August 5, 1984, in Geneva. He was survived by his children, Kate Burton (aid worker) and Maria Burton.
