Heyse was educated at the University of Bonn and Humboldt University of Berlin. He was the son of Karl Wilhelm Ludwig Heyse and held German citizenship.

In recognition of his literary achievements, Heyse was awarded the 1910 Nobel Prize in Literature. He authored novels, poetry, 177 short stories, and about sixty dramas throughout his career.

Paul Heyse passed away on April 2, 1914, in Munich.
