Muscimol is the main psychoactive substance contained in many mushrooms of the genus Amanita (fly agonist). Unlike psilocybin and tryptamine, muscimol is a powerful selective agonist of the GABA receptor.

Muscimol is produced by the mushroom species flycatcher red, panther flycatcher and bright yellow flycatcher along with muscarinic, muscazone and ibotenic acid.

Muscimol is 5-10 times more psychically active than ibotenic acid. The hallucinogenic effects produced by muscimol are closest to the hallucinogenic side effects of GABA drugs, such as the non-benzodiazepine sleeping pill zolpidem.
