Margaret Sanger (September 14, 1879–September 6, 1966) born Margaret Hennessy Higgins, was the founder of Planned Parenthood. Margaret Higgins was born in Corning, New York. Her mother, Anna Higgins (Anne (Purcell) Higgins), was a staunch Catholic; in 22 years of her life, she suffered 18 pregnancies, 11 of which ended in childbirth. Margaret's father, Michael Hennessy Higgins, was also a Catholic; however, he later became an atheist, an educator and supported suffragettes. Sanger was 6 of 11 children; for most of her young years, the girl was engaged in numerous household chores and caring for her brothers and sisters.
