Until the 10th century, on the site of the current Maidan, there was a swampy area called Perevesishche. The area in these surroundings was formed in the 1830s, after the remains of the defensive ramparts were demolished. The new square was named Khreshchatytska - in honor of the street to which it adjoined. In 1876, the building of the City Duma was built here and the square was renamed Dumskaya.
Over the years of its existence, Maidan Nezalezhnosti has repeatedly changed its name, until it finally received its modern name.
In 1961 the hotel "Ukraine" was built.
In 2001, his appearance changed dramatically. New monuments, sculptures and fountains appeared. A column was installed in the center, which is crowned by the figure of a girl with a viburnum branch in her hands, designed to symbolize Independence.
In 2004, the Orange Revolution unfolded on the main square of the country, and in the fall of 2013, the Euromaidan started, which then resulted in the Revolution of Dignity.
