MAGARERO Samuel (years of birth and death unknown), the supreme leader of the Herero tribes in the South-West. Africa (Namibia) in 1891 -1904. The first years of the reign of M., who became the head of the Herero by the decision of the herm, colon, administration, were marked by cooperation with the colonizers. However, the brutal regime established by the Herm, the authorities, and the oppression to which the Africans were subjected, forced M. to defend the interests of his people and lead an uprising against the colonialists (see Herero and Hottentot uprising of 1904-07). After the Battle of Waterberg (Aug. 1904), he fled with some of his surviving tribesmen to Bechuanaland.
