Limbal stem cells are found at the cornea-conjunctival transition zone referred to as the limbus. Limbal stem cells also known as cornea stem cells renew the cornea, the outermost tissue of the eye that must be transparent for good visual function.

Limbal stem cell deficiency is a cause of corneal blindness. Transplantation of limbal cells from the contralateral eye can provide good results. Allogeneic limbal stem cells from cadaveric donors, expanded ex vivo is also being investigated in clinical trials.
