Kevin Long is an Irish soccer player who plays for the Premier League club, Burnley. Long has played for Burnley since 2010 as a defender. Long is the Clarets' longest-serving player and joined Burnely from League of Ireland club Cork City during the January transfer window. He was acquired for a six-figure fee after winning the FAI Youth Cup, Munster Youth Cup, and FAI Futsal Cup. He spent eighteen months with the city's first team before moving to Turf Moor.
Long is known for his role as a center-back and for being a threat on set pieces. Long's first few months at Burnely were spent in the reserves before joining Accrington Stanley on loan in the 2010 and 2011 seasons. His first goal came at Plymouth Argyle in October 2011.
In 2012, Long began the season out on loan with Portsmouth and returned to Burnley before Christmas. He made his first Clarets senior appearance against Watford in December of that same year. The following season, in 2013, Long tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during his debut off the bench against Newcastle United.
After recovering from his ACL injury, Long was loaned to Barnsley Football Club from Burnley,where he helped the Tykes to promotion and also spent time with the MK Dons in March 2016.
For the 2016 season, Long returned to Turf Moor and received his first top-flight start in a draw against West Bromwich Albion. He stayed for the final two games and was then called up to the Republic of Ireland senior squad for the first time. He made his debut in a friendly against Mexico in June 2017 and started his first game in a later game against Uruguay. Long then made his international debut in a World Cup qualifier against Australia.
Long stands at about 6'2" tall and wears the number 28 jersey. His contract with Burnley is set to expire in June of 2023. In the last five seasons, Long has made a combined sixty appearances for the Clarets and has been featured in the UEFA Europa League for the club, as well as the Premier League.
