Karel Appel (1921-2006) was an illustrator from the Kingdom of the Netherlands. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (Antwerp). Appel is known as one of the founders of the avant-garde movement COBRA, which had a significant impact in European art during the mid-20th century. Karel Appel passed away in Zürich in 2006.
