He was born July 21, 1978 in Fort Lauderdale (Florida, USA) to Steven Bartha, a real estate agent, and Betty Bartha, a teacher.

When Justin was 9 years old, his family moved to West Bloomfield, Michigan. At age 15, Justin began acting after breaking his wrist playing tennis. He played a role in a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, after which he started his own children's theater group, which included about 15 students from his school. In the theater, the guys put on plays and performed them in children's hospitals and elementary schools. After that, Justin began taking acting lessons in Detroit from teachers in New York. Upon graduation in 1996, Justin moved to New York City, where he eventually graduated from New York University.

Justin Barta began his film career in 1999 as an assistant director on Analyze This. As an actor, Justin made his debut in the short film Tag.

In 2003, Bartha tried his hand as a film director. He acted as a screenwriter, director and producer of the short comedy Dignity and Disadvantage, shown at the South by Southwest Film Festival in March 2003. In addition, Bartha wrote, produced and starred in an MTV project called The Dustin and Justin Show, which presented a satirical challenge to Todd Phillips' entertainment program. In 2003, Justin took part in the Martin Brest film Gillies, which also starred Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. Justin played the role of the younger brother of a powerful federal prosecutor.In 2004, Justin starred as computer genius Riley Poole in the adventure film Treasure of the Nation, which also starred Nicolas Cage, Diane Kruger, Sean Bean, Jon Voight and Harvey Keitel.

In 2005, Justin played a supporting role in the drama of Bart Freindlich's "Trust a Man," and in 2006 starred in the romantic comedy "Love and Other Trouble" with Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker. Also in 2006, Justin played the role of Jeff Cahill in the sitcom "The Teacher," which premiered on March 28, 2006 on NBC. However, due to low ratings, the series was taken off the air as early as May 15 after six episodes were released.

In 2007, Justin Bartha starred in the sequel to Treasure of the Nation, titled Treasure of the Nation: Book of Secrets. The film premiered in December 2007.In November 2007, Justin Bartha was confirmed to star in the tragicomedy Kevin Ashe's "Holy Rollers". In this film, his character gets his buddy (Jesse Eisenberg) involved in the ecstasy trade. The film was based on real-life events of the 1990s, when drugs were smuggled into the United States with the help of Hasidim. Filming began in the spring of 2008 in New York, and the film is scheduled for release in 2009.

In 2008, Justin began work in another film by Bart Freindlich. This time he played a major role in his romantic comedy "The Rebound", which is also one of the main roles played by Catherine Zeta-Jones. In the story Justin's character falls in love with a woman much older than him (Zeta-Jones), which to the same extent has a child. The film premiered in 2009.
