Josef von Sternberg (born Jonas Sternberg; 1894-1969) was an Austrian-American film director, screenwriter, film editor, cinematographer, and film producer. He was born in Vienna, Austria, but later became a citizen of the United States. Von Sternberg attended Jamaica High School in New York.

He directed a wide range of films throughout his career, including "Underworld", "The Salvation Hunters", and "The Last Command". In addition, he authored and directed notable films such as "Shanghai Express", "The Scarlet Empress", and "The Devil Is a Woman".

Von Sternberg is best known for his film collaboration with actress Marlene Dietrich in the 1930s, including the highly regarded Paramount/UFA production, "The Blue Angel" (1930). He passed away in Hollywood on December 22, 1969.
