John Smeaton (1724-1792) was a civil engineer and engineer, born and raised in Yorkshire, United Kingdom. He is considered a founder of the modern civil engineering profession and was a prominent figure in the advancement of engineering during the 18th century. He attended Leeds Grammar School, where he received his education. Throughout his career, Smeaton maintained his citizenship in the Kingdom of Great Britain.
In addition to his numerous engineering projects, Smeaton played a significant role in establishing a professional society for engineers. He founded the Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers, which helped to elevate the status of the engineering profession and promote collaboration among engineers.
John Smeaton passed away in 1792 in his home county of Yorkshire.
