Quiggin graduated from the Australian National University in 1978 with a bachelor's degree with honors in Mathematics. In 1980, he also received a bachelor's degree in Economics with first-class honors with a university medal and the prize of the Economic Society.

From 1978 to 1983, Quiggin was a prolific researcher, and from 1986 he worked as Chief Scientific Economist of the Bureau of Agricultural Economics, the predecessor of the Australian Bureau of Agricultural Economics and Resources of the Australian Government Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.

Quiggin is one of the best economists in Australia, he is published in many journals, his speeches are massively quoted by other scientists in their works. John is considered one of the top 5% of the world's economists according to IDEAS/RePEc, which has been compiling a similar rating since 2004.

Quiggin has been repeatedly awarded and recognized for his research. He has twice received a scholarship from the Australian Research Council.

John was awarded the Medal of the Australian Academy of Social Sciences in 1993 and in 1996, since 2011 he has been a member of the Econometric Society.
