Henson founded The Jim Henson Company and is known for his notable works in The Muppets, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, The Dark Crystal, The Jim Henson Hour, and Time Piece. He was also the director of The Great Muppet Caper.

Henson received his education at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, Maryland, and then studied at the University of Maryland, College Park. He had four children named Brian Henson, John Henson (puppeteer), Lisa Henson, and Heather Henson. Jim Henson was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Children's Album.

Jim Henson passed away on May 16, 1990, in New York City.
