Born in Richmond, Virginia. Graduated from the University of Virginia. In the period from 1855 to 1860 he served as an attache of the American Embassy in France. I talked a lot with P. Morphy during the latter's stay in Paris. He was awarded the Legion of Honor.

He was a supporter of the Confederates. In 1860, due to his political views, he left the diplomatic service and switched to journalistic work. After the deposition of Napoleon III, he moved to England, where he lived until the end of his life.
