Hippocrates (circa 460 BC) is an ancient Greek healer, physician and philosopher. He went down in history as the "father of medicine".

Hippocrates is a historical figure. Mentions of the "great Asclepiad doctor" are found in the works of his contemporaries - Plato and Aristotle.

The name of Hippocrates is associated with the idea of a high moral character and ethics of a doctor's behavior. The Hippocratic Oath contains the fundamental principles that a doctor should be guided by in his practice. Taking an oath (which has changed significantly over the centuries) upon receiving a medical diploma has become a tradition.

Hippocrates married at a young age to a girl from a noble family. They had two boys (Fesall and Dracontes) and a girl. Both sons also chose a medical life path for themselves, and in honor of the famous father, each of them named his child. Hippocrates' successor was his son-in-law (daughter's husband) Polybus.

Thesallus served as a life medic for King Archelaus of Macedonia. He had three sons, Hippocrates III, Dracontes II, and Gorgias. Dracontes had one son, Hippocrates IV, who was in the service of Alexander the Great as the personal physician of his wife Roxanne. All four of Hippocrates' grandsons were engaged in healing.

The healer lived a fairly long life and left this world at a venerable age (at the time of death he was about 83-104 years old). It happened in the Greek city of Larissa in the Thessalian valley, buried the great healer in the area of Girton.

Descendants inherited a huge philosophical and medical heritage.

In 1970, a crater was discovered on the far side of the Moon, the International Astronomical Union decided to give it the name of Hippocrates.
