Hermann Minkowski (June 22, 1864 – January 12, 1909) was a German physicist and mathematician. He was born in Kaunas and was a citizen of Germany and the German Empire.
Minkowski was educated at the University of Königsberg, Humboldt University of Berlin, and Altstadt Gymnasium. He had doctoral advisor Ferdinand von Lindemann and his doctoral students included Constantin Carathéodory and Dénes Kőnig.
Hermann Minkowski was known for his notable works, such as Minkowski's theorem, Minkowski inequality, Minkowski space, Minkowski addition, Minkowski–Bouligand dimension, Minkowski functional, Minkowski–Steiner formula, Brunn–Minkowski theorem, Minkowski diagram, and Minkowski distance.
He was the father of Ruth Minkowski and Lili Minkowski. Hermann Minkowski died in Göttingen.
