Hermann Hesse (born 2 July 1877, in Calw) was a German-Swiss novelist, poet, and philosopher. Hesse was a citizen of the German Empire and Switzerland. During his career, he also worked as an illustrator, painter, and writer. He was the author of several notable works, including "The Glass Bead Game", "Demian", "Narcissus and Goldmund", "Peter Camenzind", and "Siddhartha".

Hesse wrote under the pseudonym Emil Sinclair and had three children - Bruno Hesse, Martin Hesse, and Heiner Hesse. Throughout his life, Hesse received numerous awards, including the 1946 Nobel Prize in Literature, Gottfried-Keller-Preis, and Goethe Prize. He was based in Germany during his career, and passed away on 9 August 1962 in Montagnola.
