Frans van Schooten

Frans van Schooten (date of birth unknown) was a Dutch mathematician born in Leiden who played an important role in developing the field of cartesian geometry. Van Schooten received his education at Leiden University and held citizenship in the Netherlands .

As a mathematician , he studied under the guidance of his doctoral advisor Marin Mersenne . Van Schooten's contribution to the field of mathematics extended beyond his own work, as he also mentored doctoral students like Johan de Witt and Hendrik van Heuraet .
