Faina Grigorievna Melnik was born on June 9, 1945, in Bakota, Ukraine and had Ukrainian nationality . She was a citizen of the Soviet Union and passed away in Moscow on December 16, 2016 .
Melnik was a prominent Soviet discus thrower . She studied at the Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry and achieved significant success in her sports career. She was the 1972 Summer Olympics champion in the discus event, winning a gold medal in Munich .
In addition to her Olympic victory, Melnik's accomplishments include winning gold medals in several other prestigious competitions, such as the European Championships in 1971 (Helsinki) and 1974 (Rome) , the IAAF World Cup in 1977 (Düsseldorf) , and the Universiade in 1973 (Moscow) .
